Introduction

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL's) Center for Integrated Risk Assessment (CIRA) represents the unique ability to integrate assessments across disciplines to address the complexity of real-life problems. CIRA's research objectives range from basic science programs, which provide the foundation for developing and integrating methods, to those requiring determination of cause and prediction of consequences. CIRA is focused on DOE missions and the ORNL agenda to address energy, ecological systems, human health risk, transportation safety, and national security.

With technological advances of the last century creating a truly Global Society, there is great potential for wide-ranging ramifications of decisions and actions. An incident in one part of the world can have a dramatic impact on an international scale within days. Successful solutions demand consideration of a broad spectrum of issues before addressing issues of national and international magnitude. ORNL and CIRA can meet these challenges.
